Waking up tired is something almost everyone has felt after a late night. But if you sleep a full night and still wake up exhausted, most days, for weeks, it is worth finding out why.
This article explains the common causes, the ones people often miss, and when it is time to see a doctor.
Waking Up Tired: When It Is Normal
A late bedtime, a stressful week or a noisy night can leave anyone tired the next day. That usually passes within a few days.
It is different when the tiredness stays. If you feel tired or exhausted during the day, even after going to bed at a decent time and feeling like you slept through the night, the National Sleep Foundation advises talking to a doctor.

Waking Up Tired and Sleep Apnoea: The Cause People Miss
Sleep apnoea means your breathing keeps pausing or becoming shallow while you sleep. You may not remember waking up, so you feel you slept all night. Two common clues are chronic, loud snoring and feeling tired even though you sleep through the night.
It is more common than most people think. A review of studies by AIIMS New Delhi, reported by DT Next, found that about 11% of Indian adults have obstructive sleep apnoea, around 13% of men and 5% of women. We have no figures for Jammu and Kashmir. The condition has also been linked to high blood pressure, heart problems and stroke, which is another reason to get it checked.
Anaemia and Low Blood Levels
Anaemia means low haemoglobin, so less oxygen reaches your body. Tiredness is a common sign, along with breathlessness and looking pale.
It is common here. According to NFHS-5, about 66% of women aged 15 to 49 in Jammu and Kashmir were anaemic, up from about 49% in the earlier survey (NFHS-5 data). A simple blood test can show whether you are one of them.
Low Vitamin D
A study of 270 healthy adults in the Kashmir Valley found that 82% had low vitamin D, and it was more common in women (about 88%) than in men (about 65%). It was a small study, and scientists are not sure that low vitamin D alone causes tiredness.
However, it is easy to check with a blood test. Please don’t start supplements on a guess, because the right dose depends on your result.
Other Things a Doctor May Check
Tiredness has many causes. Your doctor may also look at your thyroid, your blood sugar, your mood (low mood and anxiety can both leave you drained), and any medicines you take. Habits matter too: caffeine late in the day, a phone in bed, or heavy meals close to bedtime.
Waking Up Tired: When to See a Doctor
Book a visit if:
- You wake up tired most days for several weeks
- Someone says you snore loudly or stop breathing in your sleep
- You wake with a headache or a dry mouth most mornings
- You fall asleep during the day, at work or while driving
- The tiredness comes with breathlessness, a pale look or low mood
Chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting is an emergency. Call 108 or go to the nearest emergency department.
What You Can Try First
While you arrange a check-up, keep a regular bedtime and wake-up time, avoid caffeine in the evening, keep screens out of bed, and avoid heavy meals late at night. These habits help, but they don’t replace testing if the tiredness continues.
The Bottom Line
Tiredness that stays after a full night’s sleep is not something to push through. Common causes such as sleep apnoea, anaemia and low vitamin D can be checked with simple tests, and most can be treated. See a doctor if it lasts for weeks.
